The surviving mailing-list record dates Back's implementation announcement to March 28, 1997. His later paper is dated August 1, 2002. The paper retrospectively places the original proposal in May 1997, which differs from the earlier announcement. This entry dates the public record by the contemporary message while preserving the paper's account.

Hashcash 最初针对垃圾邮件及匿名邮件转发服务的滥用:发送者先付出计算,再提交能够迅速检查的凭证。大规模发送需要更多工作;“现金”在这里是计算邮资的比喻。
Hashcash targeted spam and remailer abuse: senders compute an easily checked stamp. Bulk sending requires more work. Here, “cash” means computational postage.

2002 年论文描述的版本通过反复尝试,寻找哈希结果满足指定前导零条件的凭证。生成通常需要许多次计算,核验则很快。凭证绑定具体服务;服务端记录已用凭证,拒绝重复提交,并可通过有效期限制记录规模。
The version described in the 2002 paper repeatedly tries candidates until a stamp's hash meets a leading-zero requirement. Generation usually takes many computations; verification is quick. Stamps are tied to a particular service. The server records spent stamps to reject reuse and can expire them to bound its records.

Back 在公告中指出,发给某个服务的 Hashcash 不能直接作为通用现金转让。若另设银行用凭证兑换可流通现金,又必须信任它不会私自增发。由此可见,仅有计算成本还不够。
Back noted that service-specific stamps were not directly transferable. Exchanging them for bank-issued cash would require trusting the bank against overissuance. This illustrates why computation alone was insufficient.

Section 4 of the Bitcoin whitepaper explicitly uses Hashcash-like proof-of-work for a distributed timestamp chain. On August 20, 2008, Satoshi also asked Back to check the paper's citation and described a new electronic-cash use for hash-based proof-of-work. Both the paper and their correspondence document this connection.

Adam Back
应用密码学研究者、Hashcash 作者,获埃克塞特大学分布式系统与计算机科学博士学位。他后来联合创办 Blockstream,并于 2016 年出任该公司首席执行官。
An applied cryptographer and the author of Hashcash, Back earned a PhD in distributed systems and computer science at the University of Exeter. He later co-founded Blockstream and became its CEO in 2016.
